Things You Should do on the First Day at Work

After exhausting months of job search, you finally got the job offer and congratulations for the new job! You beat other candidates, stood out against everyone else and finally accepted the job offer. You know your starting date, have confirmed it then the waiting game to start the job is over. You are about to start your new job tomorrow.

First day at work can be nerve-racking but also memorable as most of us remember how our first day at work went. Being anxious is normal as it is a new workplace you are not familiar with and new colleagues you will work with but also a new responsibility you have to carry out. There is a saying that you never get a second chance for a first impression. So make the best impression as much as you can.

  • Be active
  • Prepare questions you want to ask to your new colleagues and supervisor so you can adapt quickly and easily at your new job. Don’t be passive or be afraid to ask. It is better to ask questions than being confused.

  • Arrive early
  • We know that we should arrive on time at work but to make a good impression on your first day, you should arrive early, like 15 to 20 minutes before your working hour starts. Not more than 30 mins though, you don’t want to look very eager anyway. If you haven’t done the commute before, practice it a couple of times during rush hour a week before so that you’re at least somewhat prepared for the unknown.

  • Look, observe and play your part
  • Admit it or not we know about office politics, so on your first day or even the first week you should observe the situation and company culture at your new office or workplace. Important factors in succeeding at a job are to not only get along with your co-workers, but also to associate with the right ones. Talk to as many co-workers as possible because you will spend at least 8 hours a day with them, no one wants awkward silence.

  • Relax and smile
  • Try to relax on the first day because you need to be productive and being nervous would interfere with your work. Smile when you meet new people at your workplace even better, say hi to them. Remember you want to make a good impression as a new employee.

  • Listen and learn
  • On your first day, your employer or seniors will have a description of your responsibilities and explain about them. Listen to what they say. It is not the time for you to speak your opinion out loud but time for you to listen. Also open for learning new things at job not just on the first day but your whole period of employment with the company.

  • Accept help from others
  • As a new employee your colleagues may want to help you and offer some help. Instead of declining it, accept it and say thank you. Don’t pretend to know things you know nothing about. It is okay to know nothing and receive some help, much better than to make a mistake.

  • Don’t turn down lunch invitation
  • It is your first day at your new job so to be invited to have lunch together is a great opportunity to make new friends. Even if you bring your own lunch, never ever turn down the lunch invitation. It is important to show your colleagues that you are ready to build mutual trust and friendship.

For the first day at your new job, always be yourself. Observe your new workplace from company culture to the people around you. Don’t let anxiety and jitters get in your way, try to relax and talk to as many people as you can. Mingle and get along with everyone else is important too.
