How To Follow Up After Interview

So you eventually finish the final interview and hope for the best. During the interview, the recruiter said that she or he would let you know about the interview result soon. There was no expected or exact date mentioned in the interview. It has been over a week you have not heard from the recruiter or the interviewer regarding your interview result, now you’re wondering how to ask about it. As a candidate, you should always do a follow up after the interview. It is recommended to follow up five business days after the interview. But when there is an expected or exact date and you did not hear on that day, you should follow up one day after the expected date.
- Say thank you Before you follow up, right after the interview you should say thank you to the interviewer or recruiter via email or text message if you have their numbers. Send a thank you note a few hours after the interview or the latest is one day after the interview.
- Choose the right time Don’t follow up 2 or 3 days after your interview date because the interviewer or recruiter most likely is still interviewing other candidates and they have not made any decision yet. Wait for a week, so for example if you interview on October 20, Wednesday then send the follow up email on October 27, Wednesday.
- Keep it short You don’t need to send a long follow up email. Less than 3 paragraphs is recommended. Remember that the recruiter or the interview may receive tens of emails every day, they don’t have time to read all of the emails thoroughly so make sure it’s short and to the point.
- Enticing subject line To attract the interviewer’s or recruiter’s attention so they will open and read your email, you should put an interesting subject line. For example follow up interview result vs thank you for your time as subject line, the email with thank you for your time as subject line most likely will be opened and read first than other emails because people like to be appreciated.
- Differentiate yourself After the opening line or in the middle of the paragraph, write down how you’re different from the other candidates. For example your skills and experience that you will bring are very valuable to the company.
Dear (recruiter’s name),

I’m very excited about the opportunity to join (company) and I believe that my (mention your skills) will bring a great benefit to the (company) and help the (company) to achieve the goals. A follow-up after an interview is important. It shows that you are interested in the job and also can minimize the risk from being forgotten since many candidates had an interview. Send a follow-up email one week after your interview date but you should send a thank you email a few hours after your interview.
